West Africa Profile

My travels covered 3 countries: Mali, Senegal, and Gambia. This is the poorest and least developed region in the world. Of 16 countries in West Africa, not a single one is on the OECD list of developed countries. In fact, all 16 rank "low" (bottom 40) on the human development index. 8 are in the 20 least developed in the world, and 5 are in the 10 least developed (including Mali).
A few pertinent facts to provide perspective:

Religion: 90% Muslim
Polygamy: Prevalent

Languages: Dozens of tribal languages are the first tongue for almost everyone. Majority in Mali-Bambara; in Senegal-Wolof; in Gambia-Mandinka. The official language taught in schools is French (Mali and Senegal) or English (Gambia).
